The paper empirically tests the direction and strength of association of a range of objective and subjective factors with subjective well‐being in the Middle East and North Africa in the years immediately preceding the Arab Spring uprisings (2009–10). Respondents who think that people cannot get ahead by working hard report, on average, a 0.22 points lower life satisfaction score than those who are satisfied with this dimension of life satisfaction (model 7, Table 2). These domains of life reflect the most important human needs as identified by Maslow (1943). Unemployment is a myth. Therefore, to answer this question we turn to information from the third wave of the Arab Barometer, in which respondents in developing MENA countries (Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia, and the Republic of Yemen) were asked to mention the three main reasons that led to the Arab Spring.
